As you know that, cloves are one of the ingredients of many traditional spice mixtures, besides being used extensively to garnish food and bakery products. But do you know that more than half the world’s cloves are used in Indonesia to produce their kretek cigarettes and jamu, their traditional medicine and aromatherapy products. It is also effective as oral anesthetics and to disinfect tooth canals, as a mouthwash and as a toothache pain-relief some of you might know and some of you might not. They are also used to treat flatulence, colic, nausea, vomiting and intestinal worms. Traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese healers use it to treat indigestion, fungal infections, hernia and ringworm as well as athlete’s foot. Direct skin contact with clove oil, especially for pregnant women, should be avoided as it is an irritant.
