The Assassination of Gianni Versace, the latest installment of FX’s American Crime Story, is only a few weeks away, and in a new trailer, the cast and producers of the series talk about the search for Versace’s killer, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), and how it became the “largest failed FBI manhunt in history.”
The show, which stars Penelope Cruz and Ricky Martin as well as Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss, follows the real-life murder of the fashion designer in July 1997.
Gianni Versace was shot and killed on 15 July 1997, at the age of 50, on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion by spree killer Andrew Cunanan, who used the same gun to commit suicide on a houseboat eight days later. He was Cunanan’s fifth and final victim.
“People were scared. The fact that this man was killing gay men, still some people don’t understand why it happened,” says Ricky Martin, who plays Versace’s partner, Antonio D’Amico.

Judging from the new video it looks like The Assassination of Gianni Versace will not only explore Versace’s world, but also focus on Andrew Cunanan and the Miami gay scene.
“Andrew’s journey is a journey through the politics of homosexuality as they play across America in the ’90s.”

In September 1997, the media announced that Gianni’s brother, Santo would serve as the new CEOs of Gianni Versace S.p.A. Versace’s sister, Donatella, became the new head of design.
In his will, Gianni Versace left 50% of his fashion empire to his niece Allegra Versace. Her younger brother, Daniel, inherited Versace’s rare artwork collection. Allegra inherited her stake, worth approximately $500 million, when she turned 18 years old in 2004.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace is set to premiere on 17th January 2018. Check out the entire video above.
