Although some may think that there’s nothing much to do in Shah Alam, trust us — it’s one of the best places in Malaysia to grow up. Yes, the place does have many unnecessary round-a-bouts which issues can easily be fixed with traffic lights instead (any time now, gov!), but it’s also blessed with incredibly talented musicians like Liyana Fizi, Taka (Venopian Solitude) and Jaggfuzzbeats.

Hence, last week, we went to Melodiya Recordings to meet up with two guys who will be performing at this year’s Good Vibes Festival — Azrul Zainal and Omar Aiman from Jaggfuzzbeats. They are responsible for gracing our ears with hits like “Talk To You” and “Wasted Night” from their debut EP, Rest Now — also available on Spotify.

We had a short chat with them and discovered which band member is the most motherly:

Instagram Photo

Q: When did you guys start making music and how did Jaggfuzzbeats come about?

We got together during high school. In 2014, our previous band didn’t work out since some members went on different paths to further their studies and whatnot. So the two of us created Jaggfuzzbeats because we simply can’t drop our love for music.

Q: What is everyone’s role in the band?

Azrul: I pretty much do most of the writing, but I will bounce off ideas with Omar to get more insight.

Omar: I mostly handle all of the PR stuff, but I will add on whatever I can to assist Azrul. If I have nothing to add, then.. nothing lah.

Q: I have always wondered and I always hoped to ask personally, where did the name Jaggfuzzbeats come from?

It came out pretty random — Azrul’s brother suggested it. Jaggfuzzbeats actually represents the elements in the songs we make. The guitar that I’m using is a jaguar, fuzz is from the effect pedal that I like to use which gives us the fuzzy tone, and we got beat from our beat maker Omar. We initially thought that our band name would be temporary, but here we are..

Instagram Photo

Q: Let’s talk about your dynamics. Who is most likely to keep the band sticking together/motherly one during difficult times, and who is the mischievous one?

Azrul: Oh bapak (damn), I feel like Omar is the motherly one.

Omar: That would be me, I’m the mother. (laughs) Wow, maybe I am. That’s the first time anyone has ever asked us this question.

Azrul: Yeah, Omar always keeps us on track.. but I think we are both equally mischievous.

Q: How would you describe your sounds?

We have a variation of somber, folk and alternative sounds since we are heavily influenced by 90s music. Especially the pop rock era like The Strokes and Kings Of Leon. But to make it simple, we just call ourselves an indie band.

Q: Are you working on new music at the moment?

There’s definitely new stuff coming up, but we haven’t made plans to release it any time soon since we’re still focusing on our current album, Rest Now.

Instagram Photo

Q: Let’s talk about your lyrics and what they are generally about.

I guess in general, our lyrics talk about past experiences, enduring all those adolescent stuff like heart breaks and going through social anxiety. This album is a bit dark, but we try to channel it in a more positive light. Even though the songs are pretty sad, but hey, we gotta live and learn from our mistakes.

Q: Is there any band ritual you guys must always do before every show?

We would chill together to blow off some steam before performing and try not to think so much. It helps to calm the butterflies in our tummies.

Q: Who are the people you want to reach out to through your music?

Hmm.. the millennials? (laughs) I mean, we don’t really have a specific audience because we try to reach out to as much people as we can — especially those who dig our music.

Instagram Photo

Q: If you had the opportunity to share the stage with an artiste, who would it be? Name us three.

Black Keys, Kings Of Leon, The Strokes.

Q: Who do you look up to as far as music is concerned and who are you inspired by?

Omar: I look up to the people who challenges the status quo. The grunge movement inspired me so much, like how they created something new and everyone would just scream together when they hear that kind of music. I guess the musicians that really made an impact on me are Chris Cornell, Aaron Spears and Matt Greiner. You can say that I had a pretty intense hardcore phase.

Azrul: Honestly, I guess the first song that got me into music is by Carlos Santana. My dad is such a big fanboy of him, so he plays Carlos’ records all the time and he loves sharing it with me. The whole guitar thing sparked my interest to venture deeper into the music scene.

Instagram Photo

Q: This is your first Good Vibes! Let’s talk about what you have got in store for your fans.

Apart from our new album, you can expect a visually stunning live performance. We’re doing it differently this time and our songs won’t sound exactly the same as the studio version — so don’t miss out!

Q: Who are you most excited to see perform at Good Vibes?

Phoenix and The Kooks. We’re actually more excited to see them live than performing. LOL!

Q: Have you been to a Good Vibes Festival and what do you love most about it?

Yes, last year’s event was so much fun. We had to travel all the way to Genting Highlands to experience the ‘togetherness’, and pretty sure a lot of people had to go through the same thing too. I mean, who would hang out in the middle of a horse ranch to listen to music? (laughs) But it was definitely pretty cool, Good Vibes did a really good job with the lineup selection. Mark Ronson’s set was the most #turnt, #lit ever!

Instagram Photo

Q: Any final shout-outs?

We’d like to give a shout-out to Melodiya Recording and to Good Vibes; we can’t wait to grace the stage with all the other awesome bands. And shout-out to our friends and fans who are going to be there!

Listen to Jaggfuzzbeats on Spotify:

Jaggfuzzbeats will be performing live at the 2017 Good Vibes Festival, happening 12 and 13 August 2017 at The Ranch, Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands.

Looking for some 24k magic in your life? Good news, peeps! We’ve learned that Grammy-winning singer Bruno Mars might be coming to Malaysia soon!

The news exploded on social media after event company PR Worldwide  — the same guys who will be bringing Ed Sheeran’s live concert to this part of the world — gave strong hints about the upcoming concert when they uploaded a photo of Roman numbers “XXIV k” with the caption “Stay tuned for the magic!”.

Now, as many already know, “XXIVk” stands for “24k”, and 24k Magic is the name of Bruno Mars’ latest album, featuring the lead single of the same name — so the hint was pretty obvious from the start, to devoted fans at least.

For now, no other details have been provided by the organiser, but it is possible that the concert might take place next year as the 31-year-old will be heading to Australia in March 2018 for his 24k Magic World Tour.

So we’re assuming that the sensational pop star’s concert in Malaysia will also take place somewhere during that time due to proximity.

Yesss 2018!

Cosmetics millionaire Dato’ Seri Hasmiza Othman, better known as Dato’ Seri Dr. Hajah Vida, released a music video recently for her singled titled “I Am Me”, and shockingly, it has garnered over a whopping two million views in under a span of two weeks.

In the catchy music video, the Pamoga and Quputeh founder shows off her dance moves and sings, “I am a diva… living lavida” then “come to me sayang sayang sayang.” She goes on, “I Am Fun, I Am Pretty, I Am Beautiful, I’m A Queen.”

Though she may have amassed those views for all the wrong reasons, it’s pretty damn impressive for a Malaysian music video to do this well in such a short amount of time. And, we reckon that it’s only going uphill from there.. Come on, you got to give her props for that!

Our homegirl is doing us proud again!

About 4 hours ago, Malaysian singer/songwriter Yuna, revealed on Instagram that she’s being featured within the glamorous pages of Vogue Arabia.

Yuna shared her happiness with a caption that read “I’m over the moon! This just happened! I’m in the July/August issue of #voguearabia, with @jourdandunn on the cover, and lil ol’ me on the inside!”. The songstress graces the cover of the Lens section of the magazine, looking regal and graceful in a flowy black dress.

Instagram Photo

In a previous interview with Vogue, Yuna describes the hijab as a part of her, and not an obstruction on her journey towards realising her dreams. “It became a part of me immediately,” she says. “When I put it on, I feel more confident. A lot of people think it’s a symbol of oppression. But it’s very liberating, actually.”

“You’re protecting your identity as a woman. You’re protecting your magic, you know?”. Given her choices, Yuna refuses to judge anyone for doing otherwise: “On the other end of the spectrum there are women who believe in showing your body, and that’s fine, too,” she says. “It’s an interesting time to see people embracing differences.”

It’s virtually impossible to hate on this sweetheart. Wanna see Yuna live at a secret concert this week? Make sure to join the #UberYuna contest that ends tomorrow! Just follow the instructions in our post below and stand a chance to meet Malaysia’s favourite songbird.

Demi Lovato is hot hot hot as she shows off some skin in the music video for her latest single “Sorry Not Sorry“!

On June 29, the 24-year-old entertainer invited her cool friends to partake in poolside shenanigans at a house party, and it was all caught on tape as she partied with fellow celebs Paris Hilton, Jamie Foxx and Wiz Khalifa.

Fans of the song include Selena Gomez, Demi’s childhood best friend, who tweeted her congratulations on the hit after Lovato tweeted nice words about Gomez’s song “Fetish,” which dropped the same week.

With a mixture of grainy home videos and glossy production, the songstress details the extravagant pool party at her home. Partygoers kiss, take selfies and lounge in the pool between shots of a glamorously dressed Demi Lovato in a bubble-filled Jacuzzi on the lawn.

So here’s what went down: Jamie Foxx was spotted dancing in the crowd, having a good time. But not for too long, as he has places to be. Lol Jamie, you so crazy.

And then there’s the real MVP, the one who discovered Kim Kardashian — Paris Hilton — shows up. She’s DJing at the star-studded party, of course.

The songstress and her friends continue to revel in the joy of being single — amen — when Wiz Khalifa makes his entrance, looking particularly elated to be a part of this joyous event. This is the face of a man who either is very happy to be where he is..

Or literally has no clue how he ended up at this party, but he’s decided to just go with it.

Just this morning, we’ve shared news about Angkatan Wanita Amanah Nasional (Awan) wanting to ban Spanish sensation “Despacito” from playing on Malaysian radio.. and well, sh*t just got real very quickly.

The Malaysian communications and multimedia ministry has now effectively banned Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s song from all government-owned RTM television and radio channels.

The reason? The song’s sexually explicit lyrics that could inflict negative behaviour, especially amongst the younger generation, who make up the majority of radio listeners.

Photo: BBC

A part of the lyrics on “Despacito” translates to: “Let me breathe your neck slowly, Let me undress you with kisses slowly, sign the walls of your labyrinth, and make your whole body a manuscript.”

Minister Salleh Said Keruak mentioned that radio stations should take into consideration local norms and apply self-censorship when it comes to music, whether it involves erasing a part of a song or not play it at all.

But.. Wouldn’t eliminating certain parts of the song alter the essence of the song altogether?

The Latin single boasts over 2 billion views on YouTube and has taken the world by storm, even in Malaysia, sparking a slew of parodies. Damn..

Guess Malaysia will once again be put on the map for the wrong reason..

Malaysian Angkatan Wanita Amanah Nasional (Awan) wants radio stations to stop playing Spanish hit sensation “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi ft. Daddy Yankee due to its sexually explicit lyrics.

Now a cultural phenomenon worldwide, “Despacito” is the 35th single to top the Hot 100 Billboard chart for at least 10 weeks and has been reigning on charts all over the world too, on top of its 2.6 billion views on YouTube, as well as earning the title as the most streamed song of all time.

Photo: TUC Mag

According to its Arts and Culture chairperson Atriza Umar, the song is negatively affecting young children who are singing the song without understanding the lyrics.

She also added that “Despacito” and other  “problematic songs” that contain sexual and violent lyrics that aren’t in accordion to Islam should be banned from playing.

Okay, tell us.. Does a song have the capability to “spoil people” like she suggested? LOL.

Aliff Shaharom, or fondly known as Airliftz, broke the local rap scene with the drop of ‘Gwalos’ – a track that’s been making rounds on the internet and local radio stations. Last year, Airliftz went viral due to some unsavoury comments on social media regarding his physical appearance. The internet can be a horrid place; trolls may come and go, but talent is forever. Airliftz proves this notion with #BAGELEP.

But that’s not all. Airliftz also dropped a visual masterpiece he worked on with Director Calvin Too on YouTube. The short-film is 7 minutes long and features a compilation of songs from BAGEL  like the feel good track U Know It’, ‘I Don’t Wanna Go Out’ and our personal favourite – ‘Appreciate’.

Watch as Airliftz spits fire in the BAGEL short-film above. Lovers of rap, you better keep an eye on this one – Airliftz is well on his way to becoming the biggest rap sensation this country might ever see.

Wanna see Airliftz live? Catch him at #GoodVibesFest 2017, happening at Gohtong Jaya, Genting Highlands this 13th August.
